LOCAL MANAGEMENT OF SCHOOLS : A Guide for Governors and Theachers
The impact of the 1988 Education Reform Act on the education system is dramatic and no provisions are more far-reaching than those relating to Local Management of Schools (LMS). Many governors and teachers feel this is something outside their realm of experience and control.
This timely and much needed book seeks to demystify LMS by Increasing understanding and confidence and will be a valuable source for those involved in implementing the scheme. Readers are encouraged to look beyond the financial jargon änd technicalities to explore the potential LMS offers for a more open and collaborative approach to school management. The papers, many written by key educational figures, examine a wide range of issues including:
- the importance of the School Development Plan
- the responsibilities of governors
- the implications for staff in schools
- the role of the LEA
Contributors suggest that LMS should be rooted in broadly based development planning and evaluation. An agreed School Development Plan which has long-term vision and the needs and interests of children at its core should inform all major resourcing decisions. This is identified as the most optimistic and valuable way of approaching LMS.
