J. B. ALTER has been teaching English in several East Asian countries for well over 20 years. His last academic experience in Southeast Asia was as Associate Professor of the former Nanyang University in Singapore. Later on, when he was Associate Professor of the University of Hawaii, he kept close touch with Asian students such as by teaching English to the students at the Kansai Gaidai Hawaii Ko in Honolulu, which is a branch of the Kansai University of Foreign Studies in Osaka, Japan. Then a few years ago, he was with the Peking Foreign Languages Institute in Beijing, the People's Republic of China, busily drawing up several programmes for the teaching of English. His contribution towards the teaching of English especially in developing countries is voluminous. He has pioneered more than 95 textbooks, most of which originated from East Asia. This is a series of three books catering for the needs of primary pupils who wish to improve their English beyond the confines of the classroom.

It is commonly known that very many pupils are weak in composition writing, the answering of compre hension questions, lacking in their range of vocabulary, and also making fundamental errors in English usage. With this in mind, these books have been designed to emphasize the following areas:

1 GUIDED COMPREHENSION
This section contains a wealth of comprehension passages ranging from narrative incidents and travels to factual articles, discoveries, and many more. At the end of each passage, there are questions to test reading comprehension.

2. GUIDED COMPOSITION
This section deals mainly with writing skills: the techniques of writing good, clear and correct English. Essentially, there are two types of guided composition: (a) The first type is based on the preceding comprehen-sion passage, where guidelines are given on the compo sition topics to write (b) The second type of composition is what is termed as "picture composition", wherein sequence pictures together with leading ques tions and key expressions are given to help the students write with greater confidence and enjoyment.

3. VOCABULARY BUILDING
This section includes work on Synonyms, Opposites, Occupations, Verbs/Nouns/Word Formations, etc.

4. LANGUAGE WORK
The essence of this section is on the study of grammar items. There are lots of sentence structures and model language usage, followed by simple grammatical explanations. At the end of the explanations, there are copious exercises for the students to work on These exercises serve to provide students with ample practice so that they could acquire the correct language habits.
