From Instinct to Identity The Development of Personality
From Instinct to Identity begins its account of personality development by tracing the legacy of the human spe-cies from its primate heritage to its present form. Recent findings from ethology, primate studies, linguistics and other sources are used in con-structing an account of the unique features of man. The evolution of early cultures is shown through use of cur-rent anthropological work. The ideas of Freud, particularly as modified by Erikson, are brought to-gether with the theories and findings of Piaget and his collaborators in a series of chapters that follow the per-son from infancy to adolescence. Spe-cial chapters deal with play, dreams, and fantasy; with anxiety and its effects on the development of self; with moral development; and with identity.
