Morality, Moral Behavior, and Moral Development
Attention to moral issues in psychol-ogy has grown steadily over the last three decades and has become an important area of scholarly research. Today, the literature on morality is undergoing a dramatic period of tran-sition and revision. Changes have occurred in traditional positions, and challenging new theoretical orienta-tions have begun to emerge. Morality, Moral Behavior, and Moral Development brings together a rep-resentative collection of writings by leading scholars and researchers. As a product of the collective efforts of this distinguished group, the volume represents a substantial contribution to the theoretical and research litera-ture which will extend the frontiers of the field in many directions. Chapters deal with a wide range of issues, with three broadly defined central themes emerging. First is the clear need for theoretical models which are more comprehensive and integrative than those developed pre-viously. Compared with past research, contemporary theoretical accounts are becoming increasingly complex as they attempt to integrate a great range of phenomena. This book contains a number of chapters that describe work on the expansion of existing models and on the devel-opment of new, more integrated approaches. A second theme is the need for more methodological rigor than that which has characterized past empirical work on moral development. The authors discuss the limitations of tra-ditional methodologies and the unique methodological problems presented in work on morality, and explore and develop alternative research strategies and tactics. The third theme is the need further to clarify and refine the boundaries between philosophical and psycho-logical issues. This work addresses the variety of moral, ethical, and value positions characterizing the field in a more explicit way than has heretofore been attempted. Morality, Moral Behavior, and Moral Development is appropriate for use as a major text or sourcebook for upper-division or graduate level courses in the psychology of moral development and behavior. It can also serve as a text for courses in the related disciplines of education, human development, sociology, law, and criminology. Scholars and researchers will find this a truly defini-tive primary source or reference work, one that will set trends and shape the direction of efforts in this field for years to come.
