An Introduction to Philosophy of Education
Student teachers in Nigeria and other African countries often find the course on Philosophy of Education difficult to master because it covers a variety of topics scattered in different books which are often written for non-African readers.
This book is offered as a solution to this problem by treating comprehensively in a single volume the many topics, and using as illustrations relevant examples drawn from Nigeria and other African countries.
The book is neatly divided into three sections. The first section introduces the concepts of philosophy and philosophy of education, and emphasises the importance of philosophy to education. The section discusses the history of ideas as expressed by a selection of important philosophers, and traces the relevance of their thinking to the modern theory and practice of education. Included in this discussion are some African educational reformers whose works have hitherto been neglected in current textbooks. The two traditional and two modern movements in education are also discussed.
The final section deals with the analytic method which is the most modern and current approach to philosophy of education. Under this section, such key educational concepts as 'teaching' and 'learning' are given detailed analysis.
Clearly and concisely written, this book is indispensible for student and practising teachers.
JA Akinpelu is Professor of Philosophy of Education in the Department of Adult Education, University of Ibadan. He has also taught in the Department of Education, University of Ife.
